We Analyzed 70 Real Product Photography Projects. Here’s What E-Commerce Brands Actually Order in 2026.

Most advice about product photography is guesswork. People repeat the same assumptions: shoot everything on white, keep it simple, brands want volume and speed. We wanted real answers, so we looked at our own data.

At ProShot Media, every shoot runs through our production system, and every single shot gets logged with its background, angle, and lighting. Across 70 projects from the past few months, for brands selling on Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, and their own sites, that gave us a clean picture of what actually gets ordered, and why several things the industry treats as gospel turned out to be wrong.

Finding 1: The pure white background is no longer the default

The “shoot it on white” rule is everywhere. Our data says it is already outdated.

Only 36% of shots were on a pure white background. The largest group, at 46%, used a soft grey or neutral-toned background. And 16% needed a transparent PNG cutout with no background at all.

  • White: 36%
  • Soft grey / neutral: 46%
  • Transparent PNG: 16%
  • Color or lifestyle: about 2%

White still matters, especially for Amazon’s main-image requirement. But brands are no longer stopping there. Neutral grey has become the go-to for a more premium, editorial feel on direct-to-consumer sites, and transparent cutouts are now essential because the same product image has to drop cleanly into ads, email, banners, and marketplace listings. If your photographer only delivers on white, you are getting a fraction of what a modern listing actually needs.

Finding 2: Real shadows are winning over the floating cutout

For years, the default e-commerce look was the product floating on white with no shadow at all. That is changing.

55% of our shots used a natural shadow. Only 40% were pure cutouts with no shadow, and a small 3% used a hard, stylized shadow.

  • Natural shadow: 55%
  • No shadow (cutout): 40%
  • Hard shadow: 3%

The reason is simple: a natural shadow makes a product look like it exists in the real world instead of being pasted onto a page. That grounding builds trust, and trust is what converts a browser into a buyer. Brands are deliberately choosing the more realistic look because it sells better.

Finding 3: Nearly a third of every order is detail shots, and that says everything about AI

This was the most revealing number in the entire dataset. 32% of all shots, nearly one in three, were detail or macro shots: close-ups of a seam, the texture of a fabric, the way light beads on a surface, the finish on a material.

Brands are not just ordering the standard hero shot. They are ordering proof.

This is exactly where the current wave of AI-generated product images falls apart. AI can fake a clean hero shot on white. What it cannot do is honestly show the real stitching on a jacket, the actual grain of a leather, or the true way a fabric catches light, because that texture does not exist until a real product is in front of a real camera. A shopper zooming into a detail shot is looking for evidence that the product is genuinely well made. A generated image gives them a guess. A real macro shot gives them the truth.

The fact that a third of what brands order is close-up detail is a direct signal of where the value is: realism. As AI floods the internet with plausible but hollow product images, the honest, inspectable, real photograph becomes more valuable, not less. Our clients are voting for that with their orders.

Finding 4: Brands are planning ahead, not scrambling

The industry loves to talk about speed and rush delivery. Our data shows brands are more organized than that reputation suggests.

88% of projects chose our standard turnaround, which is 7 business days. Only 12% paid for rush service.

  • Standard turnaround (7 business days): 88%
  • Rush (1 to 5 days): 12%

Rush service exists for a reason, and when a launch date slips or a marketplace listing needs images now, it is worth every penny. But the overwhelming majority of brands build photography into their timeline instead of treating it as an emergency. The takeaway for anyone selling online: plan your shoot early, and you will almost never need to pay a premium for it.

What this means if you sell products online

Pulling the findings together, here is what the data tells brands to actually do:

  1. Go beyond white. Consider a neutral grey option for a more high-end look, or a transparent PNG for more flexibility across ads, email, and marketplaces. One shoot can feed every channel.
  2. Choose natural shadows where you can. They read as more real and more premium, and they help conversion.
  3. Invest in detail shots. Close-ups are where trust is built and where real photography decisively beats anything generated. If a competitor is leaning on flat AI images, your honest macro shots are a real advantage.
  4. Book early. Standard turnaround is the norm for a reason. Plan ahead and skip the rush fee.

A note on the data

This is a snapshot from one working studio, not a survey of the entire industry. The findings come from 70 recent ProShot Media projects, and our client mix leans toward apparel and consumer goods, so treat these as directional patterns rather than universal law. We logged background, angle, and lighting on every shot through our own production system, which is why we can report on what brands genuinely order rather than what people assume they order.

We will keep publishing these as the dataset grows. Real numbers from real shoots beat guesswork every time.
