We suggest a white background image that is 2,000px by 2,000px, JPEG 100% quality, RGB color mode to follow Amazon photography requirements.

Product images are a crucial factor in Amazon sales. After all, customers will judge the quality of the  product by their first glimpse. This is why it is important to make sure that your images follow the specific Amazon photography requirements.

Some of these guidelines are as simple as the optimal background color, while others may be a bit more complex and technical. This article will be going in depth to help you understand what these requirements are and how to fit them.

Amazon Product Photography Requirements

General Requirements You Must Follow

Before getting too deep into the technical information, it is important to acknowledge a couple points that must be followed no matter what. Below is a list of each of the basic image rules to apply to every image before uploading:

  • Every listing on Amazon must have at least one product image. We recommend you provide six images and one video.

  • All product images must accurately represent the product being sold.

  • The images that you provide cannot be blurry, pixelated, or have jagged edges.

  • Images are not allowed to contain sexually suggestive content or nudity. This also applies to leotards, underwear and swimwear, which MUST NOT be shown on a human model.

  • Images cannot include any Amazon trademarks or variations, modifications or anything that can be confused with Amazon trademarks. ( Examples of these include: AMAZON, PRIME, ALEXA, or the Amazon Smile design.)

  • Images must not include any badges used on Amazon, variations, modifications or anything that can be confused for these badges. (Examples of these include: Amazon’s Choice, Premium Choice, Amazon Alexa, Works with Amazon Alexa, Best Seller, or Top Seller.)

Technical Requirements You Must Follow

What we recommend: 2,000px by 2,000px, JPEG 100% quality, RGB color mode.

It is crucial to make sure the images are formatted to Amazon’s technical photography requirements. Here are the specific technical requirements that must be followed for every photo uploaded on Amazon:

  • The product must fill at least 85% of the image. The remaining 15% (or less) should be white space.

  • JPEG is the preferred image format, but PNG, TIFF and GIF files are also acceptable. Though Amazon does not support animated gifs.

  • Images must be 1600px or larger on the longest side for optimal zoom experience (1000px minimum for zoom to be enabled).

  • Images cannot exceed 10,000 pixels on its longest side

  • The maximum file size is 10 MB

  • Images are required to have a resolution minimum of 72 dpi

  • Images must be in sRGB or CMYK color mode.

  • The first main Amazon image must be on a pure white background (RGB color values of 255, 255, 255)

Amazon Photography Requirements

Photo Requirements for the Main Image

The requirements for the main image are a bit more specific because they are the image that people will be seeing when they scroll through Amazon. This is where a majority of people’s impressions will be made for a product, so there are certain guidelines that you must follow to make sure this first glimpse is optimized.

Here are the general photography requirements for the main image:

  • Your images should be clear, informative and attractive.

  • Main images must have a pure white background with RGB color values of 255, 255, 255.

  • Main images must be professional photographs of the product being sold.

    • This means they cannot be graphics, drawings, illustrations, mockups, or placeholders.

  • Images should not display props or accessories that aren’t included with the item.

  • You may not place text, logos, borders, color blocks, watermarks, or other graphics over the product or in the background.

  • You are not allowed to have multiple views of the same product in one image.

  • The entire product must be shown in the frame; images shouldn’t touch or be cut off by the edge of the frame ( Jewelery is the only exception to this rule).

  • Products must be shown outside of their packaging; boxes, bags, and cases shouldn’t appear in the main image unless they’re considered an important product feature.

  • No human models who are sitting, kneeling, leaning, or lying down can appear in the main image.

    • The exceptions to this rule are for models expressing various physical mobilities with assistive technology (wheelchairs, prosthetics, etc.) are permitted.

There are also some more specified guidelines based on the products being sold. Some specific types of products must follow additional guidelines to either reinforce safety protocols or to make sure that the item being sold is exactly what is shown to the viewer. These are the additional requirements made to fit that cause:

  • Books, music, and video/DVD main images should be displayed as the front cover art and fill 100% of the frame.

  • You must photograph multi-pack apparel items and accessories flat and off of the model.

  • Clothing accessories shouldn’t show any part of a mannequin, regardless of whether it’s clear, flesh-toned, etc.

  • Men’s and women’s clothing must show the product on a human model, not a mannequin.

  • Kids and baby clothing must be photographed flat and off of the model.

  • Shoes need to be photographed facing left at a 45-degree angle. You should only show a single shoe.

Why is Amazon Rejecting My Image?

There is a lot to keep track of when trying to follow Amazon’s photography requirements, so here are  some of the common issues to look out for when uploading your image:

  • The most popular reason is because sellers neglect the file format.

    • When you upload your image files, they are checked to confirm that they meet technical file requirements. Files failing to meet these requirements will not be uploaded to your listings.

  • Do not forget to check the image pixel dimensions. They need to be at least 1,000px or larger in either height or width preferred. Should not exceed 10,000px on any side.

  • Check to make sure your image is in sRGB or CMYK color mode.

  • If the images on your Amazon product listings do not follow the product image requirements or violate the Selling Policies and Seller Code of Conduct, the product listings may be removed from search until a compliant image is provided.

  • When comparing between multiple sellers, Amazon will favor the images that meet the style guides and standards.

Additional Recommendations:

To help make sure your product images are the best they can possibly be while following Amazon’s photography requirements, this section will focus on adding a few additional tips that, while not required, may help make your image appear even more professional and appealing.

  • An important tip to note is that your image sizes do not need to cater to a certain type of device.

    • Images should always be cropped with a square aspect ratio (1:1).

  • While retouching your image will help the image appear more professional, be careful not to overdo it.

    • Be sure to maintain a natural appearance. The more your product image looks like the real thing, the better.

    • Focus on touching up the image as opposed to heavy image manipulation.

  • Maintain the primary focus on the product itself.

  • You can also find a list of Amazon’s image standards for specific product categories in the corresponding category Product page style guides found on Amazon Seller Central.

    • In case of overlaps and conflicts, the guidelines of each category take precedence.

There is a lot of information to keep track of in this article, which is why it is important to be diligent with your product images. The clarity of the product is a top priority, so making sure that the full item is presented on a proper background under the specific Amazon product photo requirements will ensure that your image will attract customers.
